Improving Mobile Networking with Concurrent Wi-Fi Connections
نویسندگان
چکیده
Achieving ubiquitous connectivity or high aggregate throughput using a series of Wi-Fi access points can cause serious performance problems for highly mobile clients. While data transfer using a single access point at a time is insufficient for supporting delayand throughputsensitive applications, leveraging concurrent data transfers through multiple access points offers a plausible alternative. To this end, we design, implement, and evaluate a system that establishes and maintains concurrent connections to 802.11 APs in a mobile environment. We demonstrate that existing multi-AP solutions do not perform well in mobile settings due to limitations imposed by the association and dhcp processes and propose an alternative design. We have implemented and evaluated our system on a vehicular testbed. Our results show that our system provides manifold improvements in throughput and connectivity over stock WiFi implementations. We compare our results against measurements of real user needs in mobile settings in terms of application use and desired session length.

D2D Meets Cellular Using Network Coding
Device-to-device (D2D) connections among mobile devices is promising to meet the increasing throughput demand over cellular links. In particular, when mobile devices are in close proximity of each other and are interested in the same content, D2D connections such as Wi-Fi Direct can be opportunistically used to construct a cooperative networking system. In this setup, it is crucial to understan...

متن کاملA Novel Approach for Controlling Mobile Data Offloading Between 3GPP and Non-3GPP Access Networks
Mobile network traffic is growing rapidly, and service providers must manage their networks efficiently to meet consumer demand. Mobile data offloading is the use of complementary network technologies for delivering data originally targeted for cellular networks. Access network discovery and selection function (ANDSF) is the most complete 3GPP approach to date for controlling offloading between...
متن کاملInsecure Network, Unknown Connection: Understanding Wi-Fi Privacy Assumptions of Mobile Device Users
Smartphones and other mobile devices have proliferated in the past five years. The expectation of mobile device users to always be online has led to Wi-Fi networks being offered by a variety of providers. Using these networks introduces multiple security risks. In this work, we assess to what extent the privacy stance of mobile device users corresponds with their actual behavior by conducting a...
متن کاملMobility management through access network discovery and selection function for load balancing and power saving in software-defined networking environment
The mobile traffic has grown rapidly with the popularity of smart mobile devices. To accommodate increasing traffic, heterogeneous network integration is considered as a viable solution. By overlapping the coverage of heterogeneous networks (e.g., the long-term evolution (LTE) and Wi-Fi integrated network), the mobile operators can use the offloading service (e.g., Wi-Fi offloading) to reduce n...
